General Information
The Sustainable Bioeconomy for Arid Regions (SBAR) is working to build a lasting bio-economy for the arid Southwest. With a $15 million dollar grant from the USDA-NIFA, this 5-year project is optimizing the production of two low-water use crops: guar and guayule. A diverse team of researchers, educators, Extension, and industry professionals are collaborating on how to best use guayule and guar for biofuel and other high-value bioproducts. The comprehensive investigation of these two plants will help meet the requirement of the Energy Independence and Security Act to produce 36 billion gallons of biofuel in the United States per year by 2022.
Funding for the SBAR Project and Center of Excellence is provided by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture – Agriculture and Food Research Initiative. Grant # 2017-68005-26867.
