Sharing the Science of SBAR with Youth
The New Mexico SBAR Education and Extension & Outreach Teams have created a series of workshops to share the science of SBAR with New Mexican youth. Two of these workshops were hosted in January and February 2020. Thirty-two senior, eight middle-school students, four 4-H adult leaders, and parents participated in the workshops.
The first workshop hosted at the Santa Ana Pueblo in New Mexico focused on “Designing a Method to Separate the Components of a Complex Mixture,” which was offered as a session during the 4-H Senior Leadership Retreat on January 26th. Thirty two students and three 4-H adult leaders participated in this hands-on activity that explored SBAR science.
The second workshop was hosted on the New Mexico State University campus on February 18th. Youth were encouraged to “be a scientist for an afternoon” and participated with testing the antioxidant activity of guar seeds and guayule leaf extracts. Eight middle-school students and parents attended this workshop, practiced being scientists, and learned a whole lot about guar and guayule all while having fun!
