FFA Activities and Lessons

Separation of a Mixture

The SBAR New Mexico Team has created activities that bring science to life! In these workshops, FFA students participate in teams and learn the principles for separation of molecules from a complex mixture. They study the physical properties of each substance in the mixture and develop a method to separate each substance according to its unique characteristics.

Students learn about common methods for separation of molecules such as gas chromatography, paper chromatography and electrophoresis. They work together to solve challenges and try out different scientific techniques through hands-on experiential learning.
